Dewald Brevis is rapidly gaining recognition as one of South Africa’s most promising young cricketers. His recent achievement of becoming the youngest South African batter to score a T20I century underscores his rising status. Brevis achieved this milestone in Darwin, scoring 125 runs from 56 deliveries against Australia in the second T20I. Born on April 29, 2003, Brevis has been playing cricket since childhood. He gained prominence during the 2022 ICC Under-19 World Cup, where he was the top run-scorer. His impressive performances led to an IPL contract with the Mumbai Indians. His batting style has earned him the moniker “Baby AB,” a reference to AB de Villiers. Brevis made headlines in October 2022 when he scored 162 runs off just 57 balls in a domestic T20 match for the Titans, setting a new record for the highest T20 score in South Africa. He has also showcased his talent in various global T20 leagues including the Caribbean Premier League, T20 Blast, and Major League Cricket. Although his initial T20I appearances against Australia saw him score a combined five runs, Brevis has demonstrated considerable potential. In the 2023-24 One-Day Cup, he finished as the third-highest run-scorer, and he played a vital role in MI Cape Town’s maiden SA20 title win, scoring 573 runs at an average of 47.75 with two centuries. In the recent T20I against Australia, Brevis remained unbeaten in Darwin, scoring 125 runs. His explosive batting performance made him the youngest South African to score a T20I century, surpassing Richard Levi’s previous record. This century was also the second-fastest by a South African batter, accomplished in just 41 balls. He was also signed as a replacement for Gurjapneet Singh in the IPL 2025 season.
