Dream11’s withdrawal as a major sponsor of Team India is a direct consequence of the ‘Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025.’ This legislation has led to a ban on real money gaming and associated advertising in India, significantly affecting companies like Dream11. The fantasy sports platform had a sponsorship agreement with the BCCI worth USD 44 million (Rs 358 crore), effective from 2023 to 2026. The bill’s implications have forced Dream11 to reconsider this arrangement. The collective investment in marketing by fantasy sports platforms, exceeding Rs 5,000 crore annually, highlights the sector’s reliance on advertising. The BCCI is now under pressure to secure a new sponsor before the Asia Cup 2025. The future of sports marketing in India may see a shift toward traditional brands stepping in to fill the gap left by the gaming companies.
