Contrary to widespread speculation fueled by social media and recent on-field events, the BCCI has categorically denied any discussions about Virat Kohli returning to Test cricket. The rumors intensified following India’s consecutive Test series defeats and Kohli’s spectacular century in a recent ODI match in Ranchi. His aggressive 135-run knock, filled with powerful hitting, highlighted his enduring class and seemed to defy any notions of a decline. This performance came at a critical juncture for Indian Test cricket, with the team grappling with successive series losses, including a recent 0-2 home series defeat to South Africa and a 0-3 loss to New Zealand. The narrative suggested that the board might be considering recalling experienced players like Kohli and Rohit Sharma to bolster the red-ball side. Further adding fuel to the fire was the duo’s impressive batting display, including a century stand, in the Ranchi ODI. However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has now stepped in to dispel these rumors, stating unequivocally, ‘What’s being said about Virat Kohli is just a rumour. There has been no conversation with Kohli about this. Do not give weight to rumours.’ Despite this official clarification, the debate persists among cricket enthusiasts who recall Kohli’s immense contributions to Indian Test cricket, including his record as captain and his pivotal role in shaping the team’s aggressive, fitness-focused culture. The absence of such star power in the current Test setup is keenly felt by many.
