South Africa captain Temba Bavuma has addressed a controversial remark made by Indian cricketers Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant during their recent Test series clash. The comment, reportedly targeting Bavuma’s height, surfaced during the first Test. Bavuma confirmed in a public statement that both Bumrah and Pant extended apologies for their words. He acknowledged the apology but also stressed the enduring impact of on-field comments. “When the apology was made, I was in the dark about what it was about, I hadn’t heard it at the time and I needed to check in with our media manager about it,” Bavuma revealed. He further clarified his stance: “What happens on the field, stays on the field but you don’t forget what is said. You use it as fuel and motivation, but there are no grudges per se.” This sentiment underscores Bavuma’s philosophy of transforming potentially negative experiences into personal resolve. While the apologies were accepted, the captain’s words suggest a recognition that actions and words spoken during intense competition can serve as powerful internal drivers. The captain also commented on coach Shukri Conrad’s earlier ‘grovel’ remark, noting its unfortunate phrasing but ultimately seeing it as a reflection of the series’ competitive spirit.
