Sydney Sixers have been dealt a major blow ahead of their Big Bash League 2025-26 Challenger clash. Star opener Babar Azam will not be available for the remainder of the tournament as he heads back to Pakistan to join the national team.

Pakistan’s preparations for the T20 World Cup 2026 are in full swing. The team kicks off their campaign against Netherlands on February 7, but before that, they face Australia in a three-match T20 series starting January 29 at home.

The Sixers confirmed Azam’s departure, announcing Daniel Hughes as his replacement. In an official statement, the franchise expressed understanding of the situation, noting that Azam has been recalled for national camp ahead of upcoming internationals. He will miss the rest of the BBL 15 final series.

Babar took to a heartfelt video message shared on X by the Sixers, thanking everyone involved. ‘First of all, a big thank you to Sydney Sixers for including me in the team. I enjoyed my time with all the players and coaches. Unfortunately, I now have to leave for national duty,’ he said.

He added, ‘I have so many positive things to take back home. It was a great experience, especially the support from Sixers fans. Playing in this league is always fun, and the atmosphere at Sydney Cricket Ground was incredible. Thank you all.’

Despite his exit, Azam’s BBL stint this season was underwhelming. In 11 matches, he scored just 202 runs at a strike rate of 103.06, raising concerns for both club and country about his form in the shortest format.

As Pakistan gears up for crucial matches, the Sixers must regroup without their big-name import, testing their depth in the knockout stages. Fans will be watching closely how Hughes steps up in the high-stakes games ahead.
