The much-anticipated three-match ODI series between Australia and South Africa begins at Cazaly’s Stadium in Cairns on Tuesday, August 19. Both teams are coming off a hard-fought T20I series, where Australia edged out South Africa 2-1, with a win in the final over of the deciding match. The 50-over format presents a different scenario, particularly for Australia, which is facing several setbacks.

Cazaly’s Stadium in Cairns hosted the final T20I of the recent series and has a limited history of hosting ODIs. The stadium most recently held a three-match ODI series in 2022 when New Zealand visited Australia.

Historically, batting has been a challenge at this ground. In the five ODIs played here to date, the highest team score is 267, and the highest successful chase is only 233. The pitch often provides early swing to seamers, making it difficult to score runs, especially in the early overs.

Considering the pitch conditions and past match results at Cairns, it seems that winning the toss and choosing to bat first would be the best strategy. Teams have typically struggled while chasing under lights, owing to inconsistent bounce and a lack of grip for spinners in the later innings.

Both captains will be aware of these conditions, and scoring early runs could be crucial in securing a victory.

Australia enters the ODI series against South Africa in a transitional phase, dealing with retirements and injuries that have significantly impacted their team’s strength. The recent retirements of experienced players such as Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, and Marcus Stoinis have created a void in leadership and experience. Injuries to Matt Short and Lance Morris, along with Mitchell Owen’s concussion during the second T20I, have added to their difficulties.

With Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc also absent, Mitchell Marsh will captain the Australian team. In contrast, South Africa arrives with a near full-strength squad, aiming to leverage their stability and depth. Captain Temba Bavuma is back to lead the team, with David Miller being the only key player missing due to his commitment to The Hundred. The Proteas have a strong batting lineup featuring Aiden Markram, Dewald Brevis, and Ryan Rickelton. Kagiso Rabada leads the pace attack, and there is ample support from all-rounders Wiaan Mulder and Corbin Bosch, making the visitors a well-rounded and powerful team.
