New Delhi: As India gears up for the T20 World Cup 2026 final against New Zealand, veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed deep frustration over Varun Chakravarthy’s ongoing struggles. In a candid discussion on his YouTube channel ‘Aish ki Baat’, Ashwin revealed he’s exhausted from repeatedly advising Varun to avoid bowling round-the-wicket to left-handers.
Ashwin pointed out that Varun’s confidence plummets whenever batsmen capitalize on his deliveries. ‘I’ve been saying this for matches now – don’t bowl round-the-wicket to left-handers,’ he emphasized. Batsmen have started reading Varun’s variations, attacking aggressively and hitting big shots that shatter his rhythm.
The off-spinner stressed the need for Varun to adapt his strategy urgently. Maintaining a tight line and length, varying pace, and avoiding predictable angles are crucial, according to Ashwin. Varun’s recent performances have been alarming. In the semi-final against England, he leaked 64 runs for just one wicket in four overs – the most expensive spell of his T20 career and joint-second worst in T20 World Cup history.
Even in the Super 8 clash with West Indies, Varun conceded 40 runs for a solitary wicket. Over these two games, he’s taken only two wickets while surrendering 104 runs, putting immense pressure on Team India’s campaign. With Kuldeep Yadav warming the bench, captain Suryakumar Yadav faces a tough call: stick with Varun or bring back the wrist-spin wizard for the title decider.
Ashwin’s comments highlight deeper concerns about spin bowling in high-stakes T20 cricket. As India chases glory, Varun must rediscover his mystery and execute smarter plans to turn the tide in the final showdown.
