Ravichandran Ashwin has sharply criticized the Indian cricket team’s batting technique and mindset after their demoralizing 0-2 Test series defeat against South Africa. The former India international expressed his disappointment, particularly noting a “zero intent” displayed by the batters. On his YouTube channel, Ashwin discussed how players seemed to lack the necessary fight and determination. He highlighted the batting of Sai Sudharsan as a prime example, explaining how the player missed opportunities to score against loose deliveries from Senuran Muthusamy, playing defensively and getting out caught. Ashwin attributed this passive approach to either technical shortcomings or questionable tactical decisions. To address these issues and improve India’s Test fortunes, Ashwin advocated for strengthening the domestic cricket infrastructure. He believes that exposing players to more turning tracks in first-class cricket will significantly improve their ability to defend and attack against spinners. Furthermore, he urged the selectors to place greater importance on consistent Test performances at the domestic level, moving beyond the influence of short-format T20 leagues like the IPL.
