Hobart, February 26 – Australia’s women’s team kicked off their ODI series against India with a commanding six-wicket victory in Brisbane, seizing a 1-0 lead in the three-match contest. Buoyed by this momentum, the hosts are eager to reclaim dominance in the multi-format series following a 1-2 T20I series loss.
All-rounder Ashley Gardner, reflecting on the performance, struck a balanced note. Speaking to reporters in Hobart, she highlighted both strengths and areas for improvement. ‘We’ve played some good cricket and some not-so-good in patches,’ Gardner said. ‘But tying it all together made the difference. That last game felt like a perfect performance – our bowlers set the tone, and we chased the target with ease.’
The T20I defeat had left a sting, but Gardner emphasized self-belief. ‘Losing the T20s was disappointing, but when we focus on ourselves and play our best, we’re the top team. We need to hold onto that confidence.’
Despite missing key players Alice Perry and Kim Garth due to quad injuries, Australia’s depth shone through. Gardner praised the squad’s readiness, noting replacements were primed to step up.
With two ODIs left at Bellerive Oval, adaptability is key, especially with conditions differing from Brisbane. ‘ODIs remain our strongest format,’ Gardner affirmed. ‘The Brisbane win boosted us – we have a stellar record there. Staying focused on our game plan and adapting where needed is what we did best.’
She added, ‘We assess conditions on the day, not preconceptions. Bellerive is typically a flat batting track, but India’s fightback intent is clear from the World Cup. Here in Australia, the extra bounce aids bowlers sometimes.’
Australia aims to build on this resurgence, leveraging home advantage to seal the series.
