According to media reports, the idea of including cricket in the Youth Olympics came from an announcement by the Indian government, in which it expressed its intention to bid to host the 2030 Youth Olympics (YOG) and the 2036 Olympics. ICC General Manager William Glenwright, responding to Vivek Gopalan’s email, said, “It’s a good idea (proposing to include cricket in the Youth Olympics) and we will think about it.”
Gopalan’s email and Glenwright’s response were also sent to ICC CEO Geoff Allardice, Wasim Khan, Claire Furlong and Chris Tetley. Gopalan has argued that cricket has strong potential in the Youth Olympic Games and Mumbai is bidding for the 2030 Youth Olympics. Gopalan wrote to the ICC that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has publicly expressed his desire to host the Youth Olympics 2030 and the 2036 Olympics.

It is worth noting that PM Modi, while addressing the session of Youth Olympics in Mumbai in October last year, had indicated that India’s focus is now on Olympics 2036. He had also discussed Olympics 2036 in his Independence Day speech.
The email sent to the ICC presents arguments for cricket’s inclusion in the Youth Olympics, saying that just as top sports like rugby sevens are part of the Youth Olympics, cricket should also be included. The email talks about the strong relationship between the ICC and the Olympic Committee and the brand of cricket promoting the Olympic brand.
