Patiala is buzzing with excitement as the 7th NTPC Para National Archery Championship 2026 gets underway at the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NIS). Running from January 30 to February 2, this prestigious event organized by the Punjab Archery Association brings together over 190 para archers from more than 20 states across India.
The championship showcases a remarkable lineup of talent, including Padma Shri awardee Harvinder Singh, Arjuna Award winner Rakesh Kumar, and Paralympic bronze medalist Sheetal Devi. These athletes, celebrated for their international achievements, elevate the competition to new heights, inspiring the next generation of para archers.
A key highlight is the special classification drive for emerging talents, ensuring newcomers get a fair shot at national and global stages. For the first time, blind archery has been introduced at the national level, marking a milestone in inclusive sports development.
Indian Para Archery Team coach Abhilasha Chaudhary emphasized the event’s significance. ‘This platform unites seasoned internationals with fresh faces,’ she said. ‘Players like Harvinder, Sheetal, and Rakesh have brought glory to India. Hosting it in Patiala for the second time underscores the venue’s excellence.’
Sheetal Devi, fresh from global triumphs, shared her joy: ‘Seeing so many young participants here is heartwarming. The weather and atmosphere are perfect. My Arjuna Award honors my family’s and coaches’ support. Practicing at Punjabi University and competing at NIS fills me with pride.’
Harvinder Singh reflected on growth: ‘From sparse participation in 2016 to today’s massive turnout, this event signals booming interest. Media coverage will boost awareness, drawing more differently-abled youth into archery for a brighter future.’
Organizers urge extensive media coverage to spotlight para sports, fostering greater national recognition and participation in this transformative championship.
