Sonamarg, the crown jewel of Jammu and Kashmir’s winter tourism, came alive on Saturday as the 10th National Snowshoe Championship got underway. Drawing 178 athletes from 20 states across India, this prestigious event underscores the region’s rising stature as a premier destination for snow sports.
Tourism Director Kashmir, Syed Qamar Sajjad, flagged off the championship amid cheers from participants and spectators. The picturesque tourist resort, blanketed in fresh snow, provided the perfect backdrop for this high-altitude competition.
Speaking on the occasion, Sajjad highlighted how such national-level events are pivotal in promoting adventure and winter tourism. ‘These championships not only boost local economies but also offer young athletes a national platform to showcase their skills,’ he said. Officials from sports bodies, local administration, coaches, and sports enthusiasts gathered to witness the inaugural ceremony.
Athletes praised Sonamarg’s breathtaking beauty and ideal snowy terrain, calling it a dream venue for snowshoeing. The event is expected to further elevate winter tourism in the Union Territory, encouraging more participation in adventure sports.
Enhanced accessibility thanks to the newly inaugurated Sonamarg Tunnel has transformed the resort into an all-season destination. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 6.5 km tunnel on January 13, 2025, connecting Gagangeer to Sonamarg. Bypassing the avalanche-prone G-shaped road, the twin-lane tunnel ensures year-round connectivity, cutting travel time to just 15 minutes.
This infrastructure marvel eliminates winter blockages caused by heavy snowfall, making Sonamarg accessible even during harsh winters. With winter sports now in full swing, the championship promises thrilling races and fierce competitions over the coming days.
