In a thrilling upset at the India Open Super 750 badminton tournament, India’s Lakshya Sen defeated Japan’s top seed Kenta Nishimoto to storm into the quarterfinals. The 22-year-old from Almora showcased impeccable skill and resilience, clinching a hard-fought three-game victory with scores of 21-17, 13-21, 21-19.
The packed stadium in New Delhi erupted as Sen sealed the match with a smashing winner. Nishimoto, ranked world No. 5 and a formidable opponent, had entered the tournament as the favorite but couldn’t withstand Sen’s aggressive play and sharp net control in the decider.
Meanwhile, it was a mixed day for other Indian shuttlers. Kidambi Srikanth and HS Prannoy both exited in the pre-quarterfinals. Srikanth lost to Denmark’s Anders Antonsen 18-21, 15-21, while Prannoy fell to China’s Li Shifeng 19-21, 17-21. Their early departures highlight the tough competition in men’s singles.
Sen’s victory marks a significant boost for Indian badminton ahead of the Paris Olympics. ‘This win gives me huge confidence,’ Sen said post-match. He now faces a stern test against either Malaysia’s Leong Jun Hao or another qualifier in the last eight.
The India Open continues to deliver high-octane action, with Priyanshu Rajawat and Kiran George still in contention. Fans are hopeful for more Indian success as the tournament progresses into its knockout stages.
