New Delhi buzzed with badminton excitement as India’s top shuttlers HS Prannoy and Kidambi Srikanth powered into the second round of the India Open 2026 on Tuesday. Facing a new generation of hungry youngsters, both veterans showcased their class and experience to secure convincing victories.

In the men’s singles opener, world No. 8 Prannoy dismantled the challenge of 19-year-old rising star Arjun Patel 21-15, 21-12. The match lasted just 32 minutes, with Prannoy’s razor-sharp smashes and impeccable net play leaving his opponent scrambling. ‘These young players are the future, but today experience won,’ Prannoy said post-match, tipping his hat to the teenager’s spirited fightback in the early exchanges.

Not far behind, former world No. 1 Srikanth outlasted 20-year-old Rohan Das in a thrilling three-game encounter, winning 21-18, 16-21, 21-19. The duo traded blows in a high-octane battle that captivated the packed KD Jadav Hall. Srikanth’s tactical brilliance and relentless retrievals turned the tide in the decider, sealing his spot in round two.

The India Open 2026, a Super 750 event, promises more fireworks with top global stars like Viktor Axelsen and Anseke Loh set to join the fray. For Prannoy and Srikanth, these wins signal a strong comeback after injury-plagued seasons. Prannoy, who skipped several tournaments last year, looked in peak form, while Srikanth’s resilience bodes well for deeper runs.

Indian badminton fans are optimistic. With Priyanshu Rajawat and Lakshya Sen also progressing comfortably, the host nation eyes multiple quarterfinal berths. The tournament, running through January 19, underscores India’s growing stature in world badminton. As the veterans mentor the youth, the stage is set for epic clashes ahead.
