In a landmark decision for India’s air power, the Defence Procurement Board has given the green light to procure 114 advanced Rafale fighter jets. This massive deal, valued at over Rs 2 lakh crore, marks one of the largest defence acquisitions in recent history.

The approval comes after intense deliberations on strategic needs amid rising regional tensions. The Indian Air Force has long pushed for fleet modernization, with Rafale’s proven multi-role capabilities making it a top choice. Officials highlighted the jets’ superior avionics, stealth features, and long-range strike potential as key factors.

Negotiations with Dassault Aviation have been underway for months, focusing on technology transfer and local manufacturing. A significant portion of the jets will be produced under license in India, boosting the domestic defence industry and creating thousands of jobs.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh welcomed the move, stating it will significantly enhance India’s aerial combat readiness. The deal includes advanced weaponry, radars, and electronic warfare systems tailored for Indian requirements.

This procurement aligns with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, emphasizing indigenous production while acquiring cutting-edge technology. Industry experts predict a ripple effect across the supply chain, from engines to armaments.

As the proposal moves to the Cabinet Committee on Security for final nod, anticipation builds for what could redefine India’s defence posture. The Rafale fleet will complement existing assets, ensuring air superiority in a volatile neighbourhood.
