In a shocking revelation from Bihar’s Motihari district, a cunning fraudster exploited desperate job seekers by promising them positions as ‘Police Friends.’ Over 42 young men from surrounding areas fell victim to this elaborate con, losing substantial sums of money. The scam unfolded right under the nose of local police stations, with fake credentials and assurances that left authorities stunned.
The mastermind behind the racket posed as a well-connected insider, luring unemployed youth with offers of steady employment in the police department. He dangled a monthly salary of Rs 16,000, complete with official-looking documents. To build credibility, he brandished a forged letter purportedly from the Director General of Police (DGP), complete with a receiving stamp.
Victims were taken to various police stations, issued ID cards, and made to believe their recruitment was underway. The con even ensnared families of retired watchmen, with accusations pointing to involvement from a female station house officer in Areraj. She allegedly facilitated the process for sons of three retired watchmen, extracting Rs 20,000 each upfront, with promises of the balance post-salary commencement.
The deception spread across multiple areas including Ghodasahan, Palanwa, and Govindganj. After collecting fees—up to Rs 60,000 per person— the fraudster kept victims on tenterhooks for months. Excuses ranged from demands for bank passbooks to meetings at a Muzaffarpur hotel, where vague assurances were doled out.
The house of cards collapsed when suspicions grew, prompting complaints. Motihari SP Swarn Prabhat confirmed an FIR at Kotwa police station and the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under ASP supervision. As the probe deepens, questions swirl about how such a scam thrived in police premises without detection. This incident underscores the vulnerability of jobless youth and the urgent need for vigilance against such predatory schemes.
