Mumbai’s maritime security landscape saw a significant leadership shift on Monday as Additional Director General MV Pathak, PTM, TM, assumed the pivotal role of Coast Guard Commander for the Western Seaboard. The ceremonial parade at the Indian Coast Guard headquarters in Mumbai marked the formal handover, underscoring the force’s commitment to safeguarding India’s vast coastline.
Pathak, a seasoned officer with over three decades of service, joined the Indian Coast Guard in July 1989. His illustrious career spans commanding diverse Coast Guard vessels and holding key shore-based positions. Among his notable roles are Chief of Staff, Commander Coast Guard Region (Andaman & Nicobar) in Port Blair, Commander Coast Guard Region (North East) in Kolkata, Commander Coast Guard (Kerala & Mahe), Principal Director (Administration) in New Delhi, and most recently, Deputy Director General (Operations & Coastal Security) at Coast Guard Headquarters.
Prior to this appointment, Pathak served as Deputy Director General at the Coast Guard Shipping Branch in New Delhi. His exemplary service has earned him prestigious accolades, including the President’s Coast Guard Medal (PTM) and the Coast Guard Medal (TM).
In his first address after taking charge, Flag Officer Pathak expressed immense pride in leading the Western Seaboard command. He prioritized enhancing coastal security and maritime safety, pledging seamless collaboration with state governments, central agencies, and other stakeholders. ‘We remain steadfast to our motto “Vayam Rakshamah” – We Protect,’ he affirmed, highlighting the force’s readiness for maritime border security, anti-smuggling operations, oil spill response, search and rescue, and emerging challenges.
This strategic appointment is viewed as a bolster to the Western Seaboard’s defense framework. Overseeing operations from Mumbai, the command plays a crucial role in monitoring one of India’s busiest maritime zones, ensuring robust protection against threats and seamless maritime governance.
