In a pressing call for justice, the Zomi Council, Manipur’s leading tribal body in Churachandpur district, has urged the central government to expedite the CBI investigation into the deadly assault on BJP MLA Vungzagin Valté. The demand comes nearly three years after the attack amid ethnic clashes, highlighting ongoing frustrations over delayed accountability.

The council submitted a memorandum to Union Home Minister Amit Shah via the district administration, pointing out the lack of progress even after Valté’s death on February 21 in a Gurugram hospital. ‘No concrete steps toward justice have been taken,’ the document states, signed by council president Wumsuan Naulak and general secretary Paunehlal.

Valté, elected from Thanlon assembly constituency, was more than a representative for the Zomi community—he was a powerful voice for the Zomi people, encompassing Kuki, Zomi, Mizo, and Hmar tribes. The memorandum accuses the delay of reflecting political neglect and marginalization of hill tribes in state governance.

It further calls for constitutional and administrative measures to fulfill the political aspirations of Zomi hill tribes, ensuring genuine autonomy and security. The council warns that prolonged inaction erodes trust in the justice system.

Meanwhile, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla paid floral tributes at the late leader’s residence in Churachandpur on Tuesday. Chief Minister N. Biren Singh had earlier offered condolences in Gurugram.

The attack occurred on May 4, 2023, in Imphal during ethnic violence, as Valté returned from a meeting with then-Chief Minister Biren Singh. He suffered severe injuries, partial paralysis, and his driver was killed. Airlifted to Delhi on February 8 due to deteriorating health, Valté passed away two weeks later.

As tensions simmer in Manipur’s hills, the Zomi Council’s plea underscores the urgent need for swift justice to prevent further alienation of tribal communities.
