Imphal, February 4: In a significant political development, Yumnam Khemchand Singh, a seasoned leader from the Meitei community and former assembly speaker, took oath as the new Chief Minister of Manipur on Wednesday. The ceremony at Raj Bhavan marked the end of a turbulent period for the northeastern state.

Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla administered the oath of office and secrecy to Singh, along with two deputy chief ministers and two cabinet ministers. The new NDA government, led by BJP’s ally, signals a fresh start after the revocation of President’s Rule earlier in the day.

Joining Singh as deputies are BJP’s Nemcha Kipgen, who took oath virtually from Manipur Bhawan in New Delhi, and NPF’s Losi Diko. Other inductees include BJP’s Govindas Konthoujam and NPP’s Khuraijam Loken Singh. This initial cabinet formation leaves seven berths vacant, with expansion expected soon.

The transition follows BJP’s announcement of Singh as the legislature party leader just a day prior. High-profile attendees included BJP central observer Tarun Chugh, Northeast coordinator Sambit Patra, former CM N Biren Singh, and state party chief Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi.

Crucially, the Centre lifted President’s Rule imposed on February 13, 2025, paving the way for this government. A notification from Home Secretary Govind Mohan stated President Droupadi Murmu revoked the proclamation effective February 4, 2026—clearing hurdles for stable governance amid Manipur’s ethnic tensions and political flux.

Singh’s leadership is seen as a bridge-builder between communities, promising inclusive development and peace restoration. As the state eyes recovery from recent crises, all eyes are on how this government addresses longstanding issues like insurgency, ethnic divides, and infrastructure gaps.

With a strong NDA alliance backing, the new administration has set ambitious goals for economic revival and social harmony. Stakeholders express cautious optimism, hoping for decisive action on pressing challenges.
