The Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) has given the go-ahead for the development of an ‘Ultra Mega’ solar plant in Yamuna City. The project, involving an investment of approximately Rs 8,200 crore, will be located in Sector 8, near the Yamuna Expressway, and will span 200 acres. The project is being undertaken by SAEL Solar P6 Private Limited. The facility will include the production of both solar cells and solar modules, each with a capacity of 5 GW. SAEL Industries Limited, the parent company, is a prominent entity in the renewable energy sphere. The new plant will boost the company’s solar module production capacity to a total of 8.5 GW. The plant will leverage TOPCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact) technology to manufacture solar cells, which will then be assembled into solar panels at the facility. Due to the significant investment, exceeding Rs 3,000 crore, YEIDA has categorized the project as ‘Ultra Mega.’ It’s a significant investment in the Yamuna region and will be developed as a greenfield project. YEIDA issued a Letter of Intent (LOI) to the company in February, and ‘Invest UP’ approved the project in July. Land allocation is proceeding rapidly, with the handover of 200 acres expected this month. Company officials have already engaged with YEIDA officials on the necessary paperwork. The project is expected to create around 2,500 jobs, further stimulating the solar energy sector. SAEL Solar currently has a portfolio of over 6.7 GW of solar projects across India, with some already operational and others under construction. In addition, they have an existing 3.5 GW TOPCon solar module production capacity. The proposed facility in Yamuna City will utilize photovoltaic technology, converting sunlight directly into electricity using specialized coatings and electrodes on silicon wafers.
