Mumbai, April 10: BJP MP Daggubati Purandeswari hailed the Women’s Reservation Bill as a landmark achievement in women’s empowerment, finally breaking free after years of delays. Speaking in Mumbai, she emphasized that this legislation marks a pivotal shift in ensuring women’s rightful place in India’s political landscape.
Purandeswari traced the journey back to the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments, which introduced 33% reservation for women in local bodies. Initially, there were concerns with proxy leadership where male family members dominated decisions. However, she noted a profound transformation today. Women are now not just representatives but confident leaders driving real change.
“Participation has surged beyond 33% in many areas, reaching 50%,” she said. “India’s women, half the population, must have equal opportunities for the nation’s full progress.” She questioned opponents of the bill, asking if they fear women’s rise.
Highlighting success stories, Purandeswari pointed to India’s former woman Prime Minister, two women Presidents, and current President Droupadi Murmu from a humble tribal background. These examples prove women’s capability across spheres.
Praising PM Modi’s initiatives, she cited Swachh Bharat’s toilets enhancing women’s dignity and safety, Jan Dhan Yojana empowering financial independence, and schemes like Matru Vandana and Jeevan Jyoti providing security. “Modi ji sees women as partners in development, not just beneficiaries,” she affirmed.
The bill promises greater female involvement in policy-making, fostering inclusive governance. As India advances, empowering women ensures balanced, holistic growth for all.
