CHENNAI – Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin emphasized the indispensable role of women in achieving sustainable development during his address at the two-day Global Women Summit here on Tuesday.

Stalin reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to building robust infrastructure and social systems. He highlighted that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) administration’s ambitious goal of transforming Tamil Nadu into a trillion-dollar economy hinges on women’s decisive contributions.

“Inclusive economic progress is non-negotiable,” Stalin declared. “No society can advance if half its population is left behind. Women’s participation and leadership are vital for sustainable development.”

He stressed the need to dismantle structural barriers in education, employment, and entrepreneurship that hinder women’s progress. The Chief Minister pointed to key initiatives like the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam, which provides Rs 1,000 monthly to 1.3 crore women heads of households, as a cornerstone of the government’s social security framework.

Tamil Nadu boasts the highest female workforce participation in India, Stalin noted. He revealed that when new companies express interest in investing, their first question is often about job opportunities for women. He welcomed the trend of private firms reserving a quota of jobs for women.

Drawing from the Dravidian movement’s ideological roots, Stalin recalled rationalist leader EV Ramasamy Periyar’s strong advocacy for women’s emancipation. He credited former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi with pioneering reforms such as equal inheritance rights for women, recruitment into the police force, and reservations in local bodies.

The summit, attended by global leaders and experts, underscored Tamil Nadu’s progressive stance on gender equality. Stalin’s vision positions women not just as beneficiaries but as architects of the state’s future prosperity.

As Tamil Nadu races toward its economic milestone, the empowerment of women remains a strategic priority, promising a more equitable and dynamic growth trajectory.
