In a shocking case that has stunned West Bengal, a government land reforms department official has been arrested on charges of raping a minor and using a video of the assault to blackmail her for years. The incident unfolded in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas district, where Amit Dey, the accused, exploited his position and familial ties to perpetrate the crime.
The assault reportedly occurred back in 2019 when the victim was still a minor. According to police, Dey, who was known to the victim’s family through her father’s plumbing work at his home, lured the girl—whom she called ‘uncle’—to a secluded spot. There, he allegedly raped her and recorded the entire act on his mobile phone.
For years, Dey silenced the victim with threats of dire consequences and promises to leak the video on social media. The blackmail intensified recently when the now-adult woman’s marriage was fixed. Dey objected vehemently, threatening to show the video to her fiancé, which ultimately derailed the wedding.
Tormented by the ongoing harassment, the victim and her family finally approached Sonarpur police station on Monday. A formal complaint led to swift action, and Dey was apprehended late that night. Given the victim’s minor status at the time, the case has been registered under the POCSO Act, which deals with child sexual offenses.
Police sources revealed that Dey is married with children, making the allegations even more horrifying. Initial investigations confirm the video’s existence, and authorities are probing the full extent of his actions. Senior officials have assured a thorough probe, emphasizing zero tolerance for such crimes, especially by public servants.
This case highlights the pervasive dangers of blackmail through digital means and the long shadow cast by sexual violence on survivors. As the investigation deepens, questions arise about how such a predator operated unchecked for so long within government ranks. The victim’s courage in coming forward offers hope for justice, but it also underscores the need for stronger safeguards against exploitation by those in authority.
