Srinagar erupted in anticipation as Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan touched down at Srinagar airport on Wednesday evening aboard a special Boeing flight, marking the commencement of his significant two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir. This is his first trip to the region since assuming office, underscoring the importance of his presence in the Union Territory.

A high-powered welcome committee greeted the Vice President upon landing. Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, General Officer Commanding of 15 Corps, and Director General of Police extended a warm reception at the airport. Amid tight security, the Vice President’s convoy swiftly proceeded to Raj Bhavan in the Chashma Shahi area.

The visit’s centerpiece is Thursday’s event, where Radhakrishnan will grace the 21st convocation ceremony of the University of Kashmir at Hazratbal campus as the chief guest. With the LG serving as Chancellor and the CM as Pro-Chancellor, the occasion promises to be a landmark in the region’s academic calendar.

Security measures were ramped up well in advance. Forces conducted route sanitization and dry runs along the Vice President’s paths. Temporary checkpoints dotted the city, with intensified vehicle checks and personnel frisking to ensure a secure environment for the VVIP.

Traffic authorities issued a comprehensive advisory, urging commuters to opt for alternate routes to facilitate smooth convoy movement. Key restrictions include no vehicular access from Budyari Chowk and Gupkar Road to Nishat, Shalimar, Harwan, and nearby areas. Traffic from Ram Munshibagh to Hotel Grand Palace stands diverted, with rerouting via Dal Gate, Sangramaal, and Ikhwan Chowk.

Specific bans cover Dal Gate, Khayyam, Khanayar, Rainawari, Said Kadal, and Hazratbal routes during designated times. Alternative paths from Harwan, Shalimar, Nishat, and Ganderbal to Lal Chowk include Burzahama, Chandpora, Tailbal, Zakura, Malbagh, Illahibagh, and 90 Feet Road. Similar diversions apply for airport-bound vehicles and those heading from Pathachowk and Pandrithan to Ram Munshibagh via Peaks Motors Naugam and bypass.

Officials assured that medical emergencies would receive priority clearance upon verification, with citizens advised to contact traffic police for assistance. This meticulously planned visit highlights the seamless coordination between administration and security apparatus, ensuring the Vice President’s schedule proceeds without hitches.
