In a landmark achievement for sustainable infrastructure, the V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOC Port) in Tuticorin has become India’s first major port to secure the prestigious IGBC Platinum rating for its administration building. Awarded on February 4, 2026, this certification from the Indian Green Building Council underscores the port’s unwavering commitment to eco-friendly practices and resource efficiency.
The administration building stands as a model of green innovation, powered entirely by renewable energy. Rooftop solar panels generate 89% of its electricity needs on-site, with the remaining 11% sourced from off-site renewables. Advanced roof coatings with high Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) mitigate urban heat island effects, significantly boosting energy savings.
Water conservation efforts are equally impressive. IoT-enabled water meters, indoor air quality monitors, rainwater harvesting systems, and low-flow fixtures have slashed potable water use by 37%. All wastewater is treated onsite via a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) for reuse, closing the loop on resource management.
Complementing the IGBC rating, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has certified the port’s facilities under Zero and Zero Plus Energy categories. The hospital and CISF barracks earned Zero Plus status—producing surplus energy fed back to the grid—while the admin building and guest house received Zero Energy certification.
Health and inclusivity features abound: no-smoking zones, eco-friendly chemicals, non-slip ramps, disability-accessible toilets, electric wheelchair provisions, and Braille/audio-assisted lifts. Over 70% of the port area boasts green cover, with extensive tree-planting initiatives. Seven IGBC-accredited professionals drive ongoing sustainability efforts.
VOC Port Chairperson Sushant Kumar Purohit hailed the milestone: ‘This reflects our focus on environmental performance, energy efficiency, and employee well-being. We’re proud to lead as India’s first major green port.’
As global trade eyes sustainability, VOC Port sets a benchmark for major ports worldwide, proving economic viability and environmental stewardship can coexist.
