The upcoming Luv Kush Ramlila in Delhi, set to be staged at the Red Fort grounds, has become a subject of controversy following the announcement that Poonam Pandey will portray Mandodari. The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has responded with objections, with Surendra Gupta, the Delhi state minister, writing to the Luv Kush Ramlila committee. Gupta’s letter requests a reconsideration of the casting decision. The letter emphasizes that Ramlila is a deeply rooted aspect of Indian culture, extending beyond mere theatrical performance, and references UNESCO’s recognition of its cultural importance.
The VHP’s letter elaborated on its concerns: It stated that casting choices in Ramayana-themed productions should prioritize cultural sensitivity and the emotional well-being of the audience, alongside acting abilities. The letter acknowledged that Mandodari represents virtue and the ideal of a devoted wife. Therefore, it is important to cast an actress who embodies these ideals. The VHP noted that Pandey’s public image and past controversies could cause unease among devotees. The organization suggested that the committee re-evaluate its decision and consider an actress with traditional acting experience or a public image that aligns with cultural values. Surendra Kumar Gupta clarified that the VHP is not aiming to personally criticize any artist, but to protect the cultural significance and the faith of the devotees in public events based on the Ramayana. He further stressed that Ramlila’s primary goal is to promote dharma, morality and traditions, and the casting decisions should reflect this aim. Gupta’s letter concluded with the VHP’s hope that the Luv Kush Ramlila committee will take this matter seriously and find a respectful solution.
