The Indian government is increasing vehicle registration renewal fees for older vehicles to curb their use. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has announced significant increases, particularly for vehicles older than 20 years. The renewal fee for light motor vehicles (LMVs) has been raised to Rs 10,000 from Rs 5,000. Motorcycle renewals will now cost Rs 2,000, up from Rs 1,000. Three-wheelers and quadricycles see an increase from Rs 3,500 to Rs 5,000. Imported vehicles will face even greater fee hikes, with renewals costing Rs 20,000 for those with two or three wheels, and Rs 80,000 for those with four or more wheels. The finalized amendments followed a draft released in February. This isn’t the first time the ministry has increased these fees, with changes also made in October 2021. The Supreme Court recently intervened, preventing strict actions against older diesel (10 years) and petrol (15 years) vehicles within Delhi-NCR following an appeal by the Delhi government.
