In a swift response to a disturbing assault on an 18-year-old Kashmiri youth in Vikas Nagar, Uttarakhand, authorities have promised stringent measures. The incident, which unfolded in this Dehradun district town, prompted the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association to escalate the matter directly to Director General of Police (DGP) Deepam Seth.

DGP Seth assured the association that the case is being treated with utmost seriousness. A First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged at Vikas Nagar police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including 117(2) and 352. The primary suspect, Sanjay Yadav, is already in custody, while investigations continue against another individual.

‘We will not tolerate any communal threats or violence in the state,’ DGP Seth emphasized. He reiterated the commitment to safeguarding the safety, dignity, and rights of Kashmiri students and residents. Strict action will deter future occurrences, he added.

The students’ association welcomed the prompt police action as a positive first step but highlighted concerns over communal profiling, mob violence, and intimidation targeting hardworking individuals from Kashmir. They demanded a time-bound, transparent probe to ensure justice and set a precedent.

This episode has sparked anxiety among Kashmiri youth studying and working in Uttarakhand. The association urged all communities to maintain peace and harmony. Police vowed a thorough investigation, leaving no stone unturned and sparing no guilty party.

As the case progresses, it underscores the need for vigilance against rising tensions that could undermine inter-community relations in the region. Uttarakhand’s leadership remains focused on fostering an inclusive environment for all.
