The Supreme Court has strongly reprimanded the Uttar Pradesh government. The court has said that having a roof over the head is a fundamental right of the people. The top court made this comment while hearing a petition filed against the Allahabad High Court's order to demolish 24 illegal colonies in Akbarnagar, Lucknow.

The Supreme Court said that if government policies are unable to provide housing to the people, then the formation of such unauthorized colonies is certain. The court has banned the demolition of these colonies till March 4. The Supreme Court has asked the UP government whether the people whose houses have been demolished need any kind of financial help. There are shortcomings here on the part of the government. Having a roof over the head i.e. having a house is the fundamental right of the people.

The court said that people have accepted that this land belongs to the government and construction on government land is illegal. However, the bench has given time to the people till March 4 to remove their belongings. After that, Lucknow Development Authority is free to demolish these colonies.
