Prayagraj. The High Court has advised people regarding gifts received at weddings. The court said that a list should be prepared of how many gifts and jewelery were received in the marriage. After the list is prepared, signatures of both the bride and groom should be obtained. Doing this helps in disputes that arise after marriage.
Allahabad High Court has given this important advice while hearing a case. Citing the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1985, the court said that there is a rule in this law that a list of gifts received by the bride and groom should also be made. This will make it clear what those people had received. Apart from this, the court said that gifts received during marriage cannot be kept under the purview of dowry.
The bench of Justice Vikram D. Chauhan has said that those who allege demand of dowry, why do they not submit a list with their application in which it is mentioned what gifts they have received during the marriage. The bench said that the Dowry Prohibition Act explains the difference between dowry and gifts. Gifts received by the boy and the girl during marriage are not included in dowry. The court advised that a list of all the things found during the marriage should be made and the signatures of the bride and groom should also be made. This can prevent future allegations.

Dowry Prohibition Act, 1985 was enacted by the Central Government. This Act was made in the spirit that in India there is a custom of giving gifts during marriages and in view of the custom the gifts have been set aside. If such a list is made then any kind of dowry related allegations can be avoided in future. While hearing the case, the judge said that officials should also be sent to weddings, but till date officials are not sent to any wedding. Why doesn’t the state government do this?
