Uttar Pradesh is setting a shining example in India’s solar energy landscape, transforming into a model state under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. With over 10.94 lakh applications flooding in—out of 58.36 lakh nationwide—the state has demonstrated unmatched enthusiasm for rooftop solar adoption.
State officials highlight the seamless coordination between the UP New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA), power distribution companies, and proactive government policies. This synergy has led to the installation of 3,57,879 rooftop solar systems, boosting the total installed solar capacity to an impressive 1,227.05 MW. Beneficiaries have received Rs 2,440.62 crore in central subsidies and nearly Rs 600 crore from the state, making solar power accessible to everyday households.
The impact on consumers is profound. Electricity bills have plummeted by 60-90%, translating to monthly savings of Rs 1,500 to 3,000 for users. Net metering allows excess power to be fed back into the grid, providing additional financial perks. Daily green energy generation exceeds 50 lakh units, easing peak demand pressures on discoms and stabilizing supply chains.
Environmentally, the initiative is a game-changer, slashing annual CO2 emissions by 13-15 lakh tons. By reducing reliance on coal-based power, Uttar Pradesh is contributing significantly to India’s net-zero 2070 ambitions. Looking ahead, integration with Unified Energy Interface (UEI) promises smarter metering, EV charging, green financing, and carbon credit tracking, positioning the state as a leader in sustainable energy innovation.
Experts note that this push enhances the global competitiveness of Uttar Pradesh’s MSMEs and exporters, especially amid EU-India FTA discussions and carbon border adjustment mechanisms. As solar adoption surges in both urban and rural areas, the state marches confidently toward energy self-reliance.
