A meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs was held on Tuesday, with the participation of a visiting delegation of US lawmakers. The discussions encompassed the recent US policies impacting India, including tariffs and H-1B visa regulations. A key focus of the meeting was the perceived silence of the Indian-American community in response to these developments.

The US delegation included five Congress members from the Democratic Party. While acknowledging the strength of the Indian economy, the US representatives also expressed concerns regarding the US government’s stance on H-1B visas.

The imposition of a 50% tariff on Indian goods, in addition to the situation at Iran’s Chabahar port, was also considered. Some American lawmakers criticized former President Trump for his actions. Shashi Tharoor, the committee chairman, noted the discussion within the committee on why the Indian-American diaspora had not been more vocal.
