In a major push to protect farmers from counterfeit seeds, the Uttar Pradesh government is rolling out the Saathi portal from April. This digital platform will track seeds from production to the farmer’s field, ensuring quality and transparency in the supply chain.
The double-engine government’s latest initiative aims to eliminate fake seeds and adulteration. Seed vendors are now mandated to update complete details on the Saathi portal, including production, certification, and distribution records. Farmers can scan QR codes on seed packets to verify authenticity, origin, and quality parameters instantly.
A comprehensive training drive has already equipped seed producers, FPOs, and companies as master trainers. These experts will now train district-level wholesalers and retailers. Uttar Pradesh Agriculture Director Dr. Pankaj Tripathi inaugurated the two-day workshop at the Directorate, attended by central teams and Maharashtra officials who shared their success stories.
Around 70% of vendors are registered, with the remaining urged to complete by mid-March. Local agriculture officers stand ready to resolve glitches. Developed by the Union Agriculture Ministry, Saathi—standing for Seed Authentication, Traceability, and Holistic Inventory—promises a fraud-free seed ecosystem.
This move comes amid rising farmer complaints over substandard seeds causing crop failures. By enforcing digital accountability, UP is setting a benchmark for agricultural reforms, potentially boosting yields and farmer incomes across the state.
