UP Clerk Caught in Bribery Video Arrested in Basti

by World Opinion

In a swift crackdown on corruption, police in Basti district, Uttar Pradesh, have arrested head clerk Pradeep Srivastava from Vikramjot Community Health Center. The official was exposed after a video of him demanding a 10% commission for releasing pending arrears went viral on social media.

The scandal erupted when health worker Sunita Verma, whose arrears had been pending despite a court order, approached Srivastava for assistance. Instead of helping, he allegedly demanded a hefty cut—10% of the total amount exceeding one lakh rupees. Verma paid him 45,000 rupees in two installments: 25,000 first and 20,000 later. Even then, he pressed for the full bribe.

The viral video captured Srivastava in the act, sparking outrage and prompting immediate action. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Rajeev Nigam recommended his suspension, which was enforced promptly under directives from Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak. Police registered a case based on Verma’s complaint and apprehended the accused on Sunday.

Area officer Swarnima Singh confirmed the arrest and stated that a thorough investigation is underway. This incident has sent shockwaves through the health department, highlighting deep-rooted corruption issues. Authorities vow to pursue the matter rigorously, ensuring justice for the victim and a deterrent for others.

As public anger grows over such malpractices, this case underscores the power of social media in exposing wrongdoing and the need for stronger vigilance in public services.
