In a major boost for sugarcane farmers in Uttar Pradesh, the state government has greenlit a state-of-the-art cooperative sugar mill in Baghpat with a crushing capacity of 5000 TCD. This landmark decision, taken under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary SP Goyal during the 101st meeting of the Project Formulation and Evaluation Division, promises to transform the region’s agricultural landscape.

The upgraded facility will expand the existing mill’s capacity from 2500 TCD to 5000 TCD, incorporating cutting-edge technology for refined sugar production. With an estimated project cost of Rs 407 crore, the funding will be split equally between state equity and loans. Officials have been directed to propose Rs 100 crore in loans for the 2026-27 budget.

Baghpat’s abundant sugarcane supply, projected at 8 lakh tonnes annually for the next five years, makes it an ideal location. The current machinery, over 30 years old, suffers from high steam and bagasse consumption, inefficiencies that the new setup will address through modern equipment like 100 TPH high-pressure boilers, 10 MW power turbines, and VFD motors.

During the 2024-25 season, the mill crushed 4.49 lakh tonnes, with the rest going to private mills. The enhanced capacity will allow 22-hour daily operations, shortening the crushing season and ensuring timely payments to farmers. Refined sugar production will improve quality, reduce losses, and boost market competitiveness via DCS-based automation.

This initiative isn’t just about efficiency; it’s a game-changer for employment and farmer incomes. By optimizing energy use and bagasse availability, the mill will drive sustainable growth in UP’s sugarcane belt, solidifying the state’s position as a sugar powerhouse.
