During the 60th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), Indian diplomat Kshitij Tyagi responded strongly to Switzerland’s criticism of India, describing the comments as “astonishing, superficial, and ignorant.” Tyagi argued that Switzerland, as the current chair of the UNHRC, should avoid using the council to spread what India views as inaccurate assessments of its situation. Instead of criticizing India, Tyagi suggested that Switzerland should focus on internal issues such as “racism, systemic discrimination, and xenophobia.” Tyagi emphasized India’s status as the world’s largest and most diverse democracy, which embraces pluralism, and its willingness to assist Switzerland in addressing its concerns. Tyagi’s remarks underscored India’s view that discussions at the UN Human Rights Council should be based on facts rather than “false narratives.” He emphasized that India expects its allies to respect the council’s integrity and avoid time-wasting on unsubstantiated claims. The Indian response came following Switzerland’s statement at the UN urging India to take measures to protect minorities and uphold freedom of expression and media freedom.
