New Delhi’s law enforcement agencies have intensified their crackdown on the recent stone-pelting violence at historic Turkman Gate. In a significant development, police have arrested two additional suspects, bringing the total number of individuals in custody to 18. The incident, which unfolded amid heightened communal tensions, saw mobs hurling stones at police personnel and damaging public property in the densely populated Old Delhi neighborhood.

Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as protesters clashed with security forces on Wednesday evening. The violence erupted during a protest against alleged encroachment drives, quickly escalating into widespread stone-throwing. Videos circulating on social media captured the frenzy, showing youths pelting stones from rooftops and narrow alleys, forcing officers to resort to mild force to restore order.

Senior police officials revealed that the latest arrests were made following intensive raids across multiple localities in the area. ‘We have identified key perpetrators through CCTV footage and local intelligence,’ stated a senior officer, emphasizing the force’s commitment to maintaining peace. The two newly detained individuals, both in their early 20s, are accused of leading groups of stone-pelters and inciting others to violence.

Investigations point to deeper underlying issues, including long-standing disputes over land and unauthorized constructions in the heritage zone. Community leaders have urged for dialogue, while authorities warn of strict action against further disruptions. With 18 arrests already, including several minors sent to juvenile homes, the police continue their manhunt for remaining fugitives.

The Turkman Gate area, known for its rich Mughal-era history, has now become a focal point for security deployments. Barricades remain in place, and patrolling has been ramped up to prevent recurrence. Residents express mixed sentiments—relief at the arrests but anxiety over potential backlash. As the city administration reviews the situation, questions linger about preventive measures to avoid future flare-ups in this volatile locality.
