The sudden demise of senior Karnataka Congress leader Bhimanna Naik has sent shockwaves through the party’s ranks, prompting an outpouring of grief from top national figures. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge led the tributes, describing Naik as a ‘towering personality’ whose contributions to the party’s grassroots efforts would remain etched in history.

Rahul Gandhi, former Congress chief and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, expressed profound sorrow, recalling Naik’s unwavering dedication to public service. ‘His loss is irreplaceable for Karnataka Congress and the people he served selflessly,’ Gandhi posted on social media, urging party workers to draw inspiration from his legacy.

Naik, a long-time loyalist of the Congress, breathed his last after a brief illness at a hospital in Bidar. Aged 78, he had been actively involved in state politics for over four decades, holding key positions and spearheading numerous welfare initiatives in his region.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah hailed Naik as a ‘committed soldier of the Congress ideology,’ announcing state honors for his funeral. Deputy CM DK Shivakumar and other cabinet colleagues also paid emotional tributes, highlighting Naik’s role in strengthening the party’s base in north Karnataka.

The outpouring of condolences underscores Naik’s stature within the Congress ecosystem. From organizational elections to electoral campaigns, his strategic acumen and mass connect made him indispensable. Party insiders note that his passing comes at a challenging time for Karnataka Congress, amid internal dynamics and upcoming polls.

Flags flew at half-mast at Congress offices across the state, with leaders converging in Bidar for the last rites. Naik’s family, including his wife and two sons, received personal calls from Kharge and Gandhi, reflecting the deep personal bonds he shared with the top brass.

As the party reflects on his life, Naik’s commitment to farmers’ issues and rural development stands out. He championed irrigation projects and fought for drought-hit regions, earning him the moniker ‘people’s leader’ among locals.

In a statement, AICC general secretary in-charge of Karnataka, Randeep Singh Surjewala, said Naik’s void would be felt deeply, but his ideals would guide future endeavors. The Congress has announced a week-long mourning period, canceling all non-essential programs.
