Chennai is buzzing with anticipation as Chief Minister MK Stalin’s government gears up for a pivotal interim budget presentation ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. On February 5, Stalin will chair a crucial cabinet meeting to approve the interim budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year, setting the stage for what could be game-changing announcements targeting women voters.

The budget session in the Tamil Nadu Assembly is slated for the second week of February, marking the final session of the current 16th Assembly. With elections looming in the coming months, the government will stick to tradition by tabling only an interim budget. The full-fledged one will be the responsibility of the next administration.

Sources close to the government hint at major welfare measures, particularly an expansion of the flagship ‘Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai Thittam’ scheme, which provides monthly cash assistance to women heads of households. There’s strong speculation that the aid amount could be hiked significantly, alongside broadening eligibility criteria to encompass more beneficiaries.

This move comes as the DMK seeks to consolidate its voter base amid fierce competition. The AIADMK-BJP alliance and actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) are mounting serious challenges. Political analysts believe these populist measures could sway women voters, who form a substantial chunk of the electorate.

Adding to the mix, feedback from the statewide ‘Ungal Kanavu Solunga’ (Share Your Dreams) initiative is expected to shape the announcements. This public consultation gathered insights on governance priorities, welfare needs, and development goals, reflecting the government’s push for people-centric policies.

As the cabinet deliberates, all eyes are on how these proposals will play out in the budget session. For Stalin’s DMK, retaining power hinges on delivering tangible benefits that resonate with the masses, especially in the final hours of this term. The interim budget could well be the DMK’s trump card in the high-stakes electoral battle.
