Justice Vikram Nath of the Supreme Court revealed the unusual catalyst for his global recognition: a case concerning stray dogs in Delhi. Speaking at the “Regional Conference on Human-Wildlife Conflict” in Thiruvananthapuram, he humorously credited the dogs for making him a recognized figure worldwide. He underscored his role in the bench that presided over the significant case. Justice Nath pointed out that he is now recognized not only within the legal community but also within the wider public. He cited this particular case as the reason for his broadened recognition. He also shared that he receives blessings and good wishes from dog lovers and even, in jest, from the dogs themselves. Justice Nath expressed his appreciation to the Chief Justice of India, B. R. Gavai, for entrusting him with the case. At the ‘Law Asia POLA Summit,’ foreign lawyers’ association heads inquired about the case, which provided him a sense of pride. The bench led by Justice Nath stayed an order banning the release of stray dogs in Delhi-NCR, ensuring their return to their original locations following vaccination and sterilization. Justice Nath was assigned the case during widespread protest against the earlier order, which was considered inhumane. His bench was able to provide a balanced solution. Justice Vikram Nath is in line to become the next Chief Justice of India after the current Chief Justice B. R. Gavai, likely to assume the post in 2027.
