The Supreme Court’s verdict on stray dogs in Delhi has led to ongoing debate. Various individuals, including politicians, actors, and social workers, have expressed their opinions regarding the ruling. Animal rights advocate and BJP leader Maneka Gandhi has stated her opposition to animal cruelty.

The Supreme Court’s decision, motivated by the rise in dog bite cases, mandates the relocation of stray dogs to shelters. Data shows roughly 300,000 dog bite incidents were registered from January 2022 to July 2025, largely involving stray dogs. The Supreme Court’s decision was based on these statistics.

Gandhi expressed that no one supports the mistreatment of animals. She said that people believe if the dogs are removed, children will not be bitten, and she agrees with this. She warned that if 300,000 dogs are removed from Delhi, an equal number from Ghaziabad and Faridabad would arrive within a week. She added that removing those dogs would also be ineffective because of the readily available food supply in Delhi.

Gandhi highlighted the presence of over 50,000 illegal chicken centers and unlicensed meat shops, which contribute to the growing population of stray animals. She said that laws must first be enforced for the meat shops. Otherwise, the problem will never be solved.

Gandhi stated her desire for the Chief Justice to review the decision and find the best solution. She said the goal is the same: fewer dogs, no bites, and peace for everyone.
