The city of Srinagar held a significant Ashura procession, a commemoration of Imam Hussein’s martyrdom during the Battle of Karbala, observed by the Shia Muslim community. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha joined the procession, offering water to the mourners along the traditional route from Bota Kadal to Imambara Zadibal. The event, which saw the participation of thousands, honored Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who was killed in 680 CE. The administration permitted the procession with security measures in place to ensure communal harmony and public order. Lieutenant Governor Sinha presented a ‘chadar’ to Zuljanah, representing unity among the participants. The presence of security forces, including police and CRPF personnel, ensured safe passage. The procession’s continuation for the third year after a 35-year ban highlights a move toward peace. The procession concluded at Imambara Zadibal, where Zuljanah was venerated.
