In a decisive move to curb digital misinformation, Srinagar police have registered FIRs against prominent figures, including Member of Parliament Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and former Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu. The action, announced on Wednesday, stems from allegations of disseminating false and fabricated content on social media platforms.

Authorities revealed that credible intelligence pointed to the duo’s involvement in posting misleading material aimed at inciting fear, disrupting public order, and provoking unlawful activities. ‘The content in question appears to promote unverified information capable of disturbing public peace and social harmony,’ a police statement emphasized.

Such deliberate attempts to spread falsehoods pose a grave threat to peace, security, and overall stability in the region, officials warned. Consequently, two FIRs—numbers 02/2026 and 03/2026—have been lodged at the Cyber Police Station under sections 197(1)(d) and 353(1)(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Investigations are underway.

Srinagar police reiterated their unwavering commitment to maintaining law and order. Citizens are urged to verify information from official sources before sharing online content that could jeopardize communal harmony or public safety. Strict legal action will follow any violations.

This crackdown comes amid ongoing restrictions in the Kashmir Valley, now extended for a third consecutive day. All schools, colleges, and universities remain closed until March 7, with exams at Kashmir University postponed. The measures underscore the administration’s focus on stability amid rising tensions fueled by online rumors.

As digital platforms become battlegrounds for narratives, this incident highlights the growing scrutiny on public figures’ online conduct. Law enforcement’s proactive stance serves as a reminder that freedom of expression does not extend to endangering societal fabric.
