CHENNAI: In a dramatic return to Tamil Nadu politics ahead of the 2026 assembly elections, V.K. Shashikla, the once-powerful aide to late Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, has announced the formation of a new party named Amma Dravidar Munnetra Kazhagam (ADMK). This move is seen as a direct challenge to her nephew T.T.V. Dhinakaran’s Amma Makka Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK), potentially reshaping the political landscape in the southern districts.

The announcement came during a public event in Ramanathapuram on Jayalalithaa’s birth anniversary. Shashikla unveiled the party’s flag, featuring images of AIADMK founders M.G. Ramachandran, Jayalalithaa, and C.N. Annadurai. This symbolic gesture underscores her intent to reclaim the Dravidian legacy and the enduring ‘Amma’ brand that Jayalalithaa popularized.

Political analysts view the party’s name—strikingly similar to the original AIADMK—as a calculated strategy to woo back Jayalalithaa’s loyal supporters. Shashikla, who wielded significant influence during her time as general secretary of AIADMK, was sidelined after corruption convictions but now seeks redemption through this new platform.

Sources indicate she plans to field over 20 candidates in southern districts where communities like Thevar, Kallar, and Agamudayar hold sway. These areas have historically been strongholds for her influence. By targeting constituencies where AMMK might contest, Shashikla could split opposition votes, complicating the electoral math for major parties like DMK and AIADMK.

Her re-entry injects fresh uncertainty into Tamil Nadu’s polarized politics. With DMK in power and AIADMK rebuilding under Edappadi K. Palaniswami, Shashikla’s ADMK could fragment the anti-incumbency vote. As campaigns heat up, all eyes are on whether she can revive her fortunes and alter the southern equation.

This development signals a multi-cornered contest in 2026, where caste dynamics and brand loyalty will play pivotal roles. Shashikla’s gamble might just rewrite the script in Tamil Nadu’s high-stakes political drama.
