    Rs 2,000 Notes Continue to Circulate Despite Withdrawal: RBI’s Recent Findings

    Data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reveals that Rs 2,000 notes worth Rs 5,884 crore are still in circulation as of October 1. The RBI had previously withdrawn these notes from circulation on May 19, 2023, but they are still considered legal tender. The RBI noted that the total value of Rs 2000 banknotes in circulation, which stood at Rs 3.56 lakh crore on May 19, 2023, has reduced to Rs 5,884 crore as of September 30, 2025. The central bank also confirmed that around 98.35 percent of the Rs 2000 banknotes in circulation on May 19, 2023, have been returned.
