KOLKATA: The horrific rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College on August 9, 2024, continues to send shockwaves through West Bengal. As the state gears up for assembly elections, the victim’s parents have made a stunning revelation. Multiple political parties have approached them with offers to contest the polls, but the grieving family remains steadfast in their demand for justice over political gain.
Speaking to reporters in Kolkata, the parents of the tragic doctor disclosed that leaders from various parties, including TMC, CPM, and BJP, have extended invitations to join the electoral fray. The mother recounted how TMC had been persistent from the outset, even dangling financial incentives. ‘We turned them all down,’ she said firmly. ‘Our fight is for justice, not seats in the assembly.’
The father echoed her sentiments, emphasizing their apolitical stance. ‘We’re ordinary people, not politicians. All we want is accountability for our daughter’s brutal killing. Only when justice is served will we consider any party’s support.’ He specifically mentioned a proposal from BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, which they politely declined.
The case, initially probed by Kolkata Police and later backed by the CBI, pinned the crime solely on Sanjay Roy, who received a life sentence. Yet, the family insists the full truth remains buried. ‘Many questions linger unanswered,’ the father noted. ‘This isn’t just about one man; it’s a failure of the system.’
Their refusal to be politicized has ignited debates on law and order in Bengal. With elections looming, the RG Kar tragedy underscores deeper issues of women’s safety in medical institutions and the nexus of crime and politics. The family’s resolute voice demands not votes, but a thorough reckoning.
