In a stunning development shaking Kerala’s political landscape, former Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala has openly challenged the findings of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the sensational gold theft from the Lord Ayyappa Temple at Sabarimala. The multi-crore heist, which came to light last year, involved the mysterious disappearance of over 300 sovereigns of gold ornaments and precious jewels from the temple’s sanctum sanctorum.

Chennithala, a veteran Congress leader with deep roots in Kerala politics, voiced his skepticism during a press conference in Kochi today. ‘The SIT report raises more questions than it answers,’ he asserted, pointing to alleged lapses in the investigation process. He demanded a thorough review, accusing the probe team of overlooking critical evidence and failing to interrogate key suspects adequately.

The theft, first reported in early 2023, sent shockwaves through devotees worldwide. The gold, offered as ‘nee payasam’ by pilgrims, symbolized unwavering faith. Initial probes revealed security breaches, including tampered CCTV footage and unauthorized access during off-hours. Despite arrests of minor temple staff, the masterminds remain at large, fueling public outrage.

Chennithala didn’t hold back on the LDF government, led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. ‘This is a cover-up to protect the guilty,’ he charged, urging Governor Arif Mohammed Khan to intervene. Congress workers rallied behind him, staging protests outside the Devaswom Board office, demanding a CBI inquiry.

As the controversy escalates, temple authorities face mounting pressure. The Travancore Devaswom Board has promised enhanced security measures, including AI surveillance, but trust erosion persists. Devotees question if divine justice will prevail amid political blame games. With Makaravilakku festival approaching, the spotlight intensifies on resolving this sacred scandal swiftly.
