New Delhi witnessed high drama in the Lok Sabha as opposition MPs surged towards the ruling party’s benches amid intense protests, prompting sharp criticism from Samajwadi Party’s Rajya Sabha MP Ram Gopal Yadav. Speaking on Thursday, Yadav declared such actions utterly wrong, emphasizing that they undermine parliamentary decorum.
The chaos erupted during a heated session where opposition members disrupted proceedings with vociferous protests. Multiple adjournments were forced as MPs abandoned their seats and advanced aggressively towards the treasury benches. This uproar even derailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled address, leaving the House in disarray.
Yadav, a veteran parliamentarian, underscored the sanctity of democratic spaces. ‘The Prime Minister should have been allowed to speak. Preventing anyone from addressing the House goes against the spirit of democracy. Parliament exists for debate, discussion, questioning, and deliberation,’ he asserted firmly.
Defending the opposition’s fervor, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari highlighted historical precedents. ‘Throughout democratic history, MPs have entered the well of the House during agitations. Our members have done the same as in the past,’ he noted, downplaying the incident.
Tiwari went further, accusing the Prime Minister of shirking responsibility. ‘For the first time in history, after the India-US trade deal and MM Narayanan’s book, the PM lacks the moral courage to face Parliament and the nation. His Council of Ministers is collectively accountable to this House,’ he charged.
The Congress leader lamented the stain on India’s democratic legacy, pointing out that the Prime Minister disrespected the President’s address by failing to respond, thereby diminishing the dignity of the office. As tensions simmer, the episode underscores deepening divides in India’s parliamentary politics, raising questions about decorum and accountability in the world’s largest democracy.
