A protest in Nandurbar, Maharashtra, over the killing of a tribal youth escalated into a violent demonstration. Thousands from the tribal community were marching towards the collector’s office when some groups started throwing stones and vandalizing property. The situation quickly became uncontrollable, leading to violent clashes. Witnesses reported that protestors damaged government vehicles parked in the collectorate compound.

Police used a lathi charge and tear gas to regain control. Several police officers and protesters sustained injuries and were admitted to Nandurbar District Hospital. Protesters are demanding harsh punishment for those responsible for the recent murder. Some organizations are calling for the death penalty for the accused. They also want fair compensation and security for the victim’s family.

The administration has appealed to citizens to remain peaceful, stating that some involved in the violence have been detained and the entire matter is under investigation. Additional police forces have been deployed to address the rising tensions in the district. The administration hopes for a quick return to normalcy.

On September 16, local tribal activist Jai Valvi was murdered by attackers. Protesters are demanding the death penalty for the murderers of Jai Valvi. Police have arrested suspects and are thoroughly investigating the motives behind the killing.
