Manipur has been governed under President’s rule since February 2025, following the resignation of then-Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on February 9th. The resignation created a governmental void, leading to the imposition of President’s rule. Now, the focus has shifted towards forming a new government in the state, with several leaders from Manipur arriving in Delhi. The Governor is also in Delhi. The period of President’s rule has exceeded seven months.

BJP MLAs from Manipur are in Delhi to meet with central leaders to discuss government formation. Former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, along with seven MLAs, is in Delhi for these discussions.

Before departing for Delhi, N. Biren Singh said, “I will be discussing with central leaders regarding the formation of a new government, finding solutions to the issues of internally displaced persons, and requesting the reopening of main highways.”

Two separate groups of MLAs have traveled to Delhi. Former Minister Sapam Ranjan Singh, Heikham Dingo Singh, and BJP MLA Thongbam Robindro Singh accompanied the former Chief Minister to Delhi on Saturday. Furthermore, some MLAs representing the Meitei community have arrived in Delhi, including former ministers Leishangthem Susindro Meitei, Thangjam Arun Kumar, and Lourembam Rameshwor. These two groups traveled to Delhi independently.

Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh, former Minister Govindas Konthoujam, and MLAs Kongkham Robindro, Sapam Kunjakeshwar, Thounaojam Shyamkumar, and Karam Shyam may also travel to Delhi. The increasing number of leaders in Delhi indicates that the formation of a Manipur government may be imminent. Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah recently visited Manipur.

President’s rule was imposed after the CM’s resignation. Hundreds of lives have been lost due to the violence in Manipur. The state had a BJP-led coalition government under Biren Singh before President’s rule was implemented on February 13 of this year. N. Biren Singh resigned on February 9, 2025, after the violence that began on May 3, 2023. President’s rule was declared four days later, and it has been in effect for nearly seven months.
